Short answer: no. In Ontario, you can book directly with a registered physiotherapist. No doctor's referral required.

If you've been putting off physio because you thought you needed a doctor's note first, this one's for you. Here's what you need to know before booking physiotherapy in Oshawa, and what your first visit at ODP Rehab looks like.

Do I need a doctor's note for my insurance?

Sometimes. Physiotherapists in Ontario are "direct access," which means you can see one without a referral. But some extended health plans ask for a doctor's note before they'll cover treatment.

The easiest way to know: check your benefits booklet or call your provider. Or give us a call and our front desk can help you figure it out.

Does ODP Rehab offer direct billing?

Yes. We bill most insurance providers directly, so you don't have to pay upfront and wait to be reimbursed. Bring your insurance details to your first visit and we'll take care of the rest.

What happens at your first physiotherapy appointment?

Your first visit is all about understanding what's going on. Here's what to expect:

  1. A conversation. We'll ask about your pain or injury, how it happened, and what you want to get back to doing.

  2. An assessment. Your physiotherapist will check your movement, strength, flexibility and posture.

  3. A plan. You'll leave knowing what's causing the problem and how we'll treat it.

  4. Treatment starts. Most patients get hands-on treatment or exercises on day one.

  5. Homework. You'll go home with a few simple exercises to keep progress going between visits.

Wear comfortable clothes you can move in. If you have any imaging reports or surgical notes, bring those too.

What can physiotherapy help with?

Physiotherapy helps with much more than sports injuries. At ODP Rehab, we help Oshawa and Durham Region patients with:

  • Back and neck pain

  • Sprains, strains and joint injuries

  • Post-surgery rehab

  • Repetitive strain injuries

  • Headaches linked to neck tension

  • Balance and mobility issues

  • Work and motor vehicle accident injuries

When should you book?

Sooner is usually better. If pain has lasted more than a week, keeps coming back, or is stopping you from work, sleep or the things you love, it's time to get it looked at.
