Physiotherapist working on someones neck

Does the room spin when you roll over in bed? Do you feel off balance when you look up or turn your head quickly? You might be dealing with vertigo, and the good news is that physiotherapy can help.

What is vertigo?

Vertigo is the feeling that you or the room around you is spinning or moving. It's usually linked to the inner ear, which plays a big role in your balance. Common signs include:

  • A spinning feeling when you change positions

  • Dizziness when rolling over, bending down or looking up

  • Feeling unsteady on your feet

  • Nausea during dizzy spells

What causes it?

One of the most common causes is BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo). It happens when tiny crystals in the inner ear move out of place. Other causes include inner ear inflammation, concussion and some neck problems.

What is vestibular physiotherapy?

Vestibular physiotherapy is a type of physio that treats dizziness and balance problems. Your physiotherapist will:

  1. Find the cause. We'll ask about your symptoms and do specific tests to see what's triggering the dizziness.

  2. Treat it directly. For BPPV, a simple series of guided head movements can often reposition the crystals, sometimes in just one or two visits.

  3. Retrain your balance. Exercises help your brain and inner ear work together again.

  4. Build confidence. You'll get a home program so you can move without worrying about the next dizzy spell.

When to book an assessment

Book with a physiotherapist if:

  • Dizziness comes on when you move your head or change positions

  • You've had dizzy spells for more than a few days

  • You feel unsteady or worried about falling

  • Dizziness started after a concussion or fall

If dizziness comes with sudden weakness, trouble speaking, a severe headache or vision changes, call 911 right away.
